A geographical indication is a sign certifying the quality, reputation or other characteristics that a product has in connection with a particular locality, region or place. It preserves the value of regional products, prevents unfair use and safeguards the common heritage of producers. A traditional product name, on the other hand, provides protection for names that indicate the traditional production method or composition of a product, without requiring a link to the region the product belongs to.
Who can apply?
A geographical indication application is filed by organizations acting on behalf of the producers of the product, such as producer associations, cooperatives, municipalities, and chambers of commerce and industry. In the application, elements such as the definition of the product, the production method, the geographical boundaries, the link between the product's qualities and the region, and the inspection method are set out in a detailed product specification.
